ABOUT THE FOUNDATION
The Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union Foundation was formed in 2007 to aid FMFCU in collecting and distributing funds for the charitable and educational causes in the community that the credit union serves. Over the past few years the potential of the Foundation became apparent to the board and a new push to transition the Credit Union’s financial literacy program to the Foundation was established. The FMFCU Foundation supports the Credit Union in its giving and internal fundraising for various community charities. The FMFCU Foundation supports Delco Hi-Q, the longest continuous high school academic competition, which has been a Delaware County tradition since 1948. FMFCU and the Foundation, in a partnership with the Delaware County Daily Times newspaper and others, support the Delaware County Excellence in Teaching Award. This award recognizes outstanding teachers in the county’s public and private schools.
The Partners In Learning Financial Literacy Program began as a project of the Credit Union several years ago. Since its inception, the program has expanded into twelve school districts in Chester and Delaware Counties, reaching over 8,000 students annually; it also operates five student operated high school branches. The FMFCU Foundation aids in the funding of this program through its fundraising efforts and FMFCU staff help to facilitate the program in with the area schools. The newest planned addition to the program will be the K-2 Financial Resource Center.
Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union is a financial institution with over 70,000 members and has been in operation since 1970 and embodies the philosophy of “people helping people”. FMFCU and the Foundation truly care for the well being of its members and the community, so it was natural for them to give back to the community by supporting a financial literacy initiative. As a financial institution our financial literacy educators have readily available resources to aid them in teaching students sound financial practices. The availability of a variety of expert individuals, in combination with the fact that our financial educators are former teachers who hold advanced degrees in education, allows us to make a program that is applicable, meaningful, effective, and a cut above the rest.
The Foundation receives funding for its financial literacy program from donations, grants, fundraising and support from FMFCU. The Foundation does not have employees, all programs are facilitated by employee of the Credit Union, allowing all funding to go directly to the program.
Currently the FMFCU Foundation operates in Delaware, Chester and Montgomery counties, which surround Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. These counties encompass a wide variety of races, education levels, and socio-economic statuses. We reach out to all levels of education from K-12 as well as local institutions of high learning. We also work with all levels of socio-economic status from the lower income areas, which are closer to Philadelphia city limits, the middle to high income of the outer suburbs as well as the mixed income in the rural areas of Chester and Montgomery counties. Delaware County is one of the more ethnically diverse areas in the region, aside from the city of Philadelphia. |
